An Introduction

What is The Brockton Republican City Committee?

The Brockton Republican City Committee is a group of citizens of Brockton who are interested in promoting the principles of the Republican Party. They meet to plan and discuss programs to support political candidates and Republican activities. Individual members participate voluntarily in political campaigns and fund-raising events of their choice.

Is it part of a bigger organization?

Yes. The Committee is organized under the auspices of the Republican National Committee and the Massachusetts Republican Committee. Each of its members belongs to one of the seven Brockton Republican Ward Committees. The activities of the Committee are governed by Federal law, Masachusetts law, the bylaws of the national and state Republican Committees, and its own bylaws.

How are its members chosen?

Every four years (2007, 2011, etc.) each Republican Ward Committee chairman submits to the City of Brockton and to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the signatures of registered Republicans who live in his/her ward and who have agreed to serve on the Ward Committee. The list of candidates appears on the Republican primary ballot in the Presidential Primary election held the following March. Up to 35 candidates are elected to each Ward Committee. Every Ward Committee member automatically becomes a member of the City Committee. The Ward and City Committees then elect their own new Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, and other officers provided for in their bylaws. The Ward Committees can then elect addtional registered Republicans from their wards at any time, up to a total membership of 35 in each Ward Committee. The City Committee cannot elect members; voting members and additional Associate Members can be elected only by the Ward Committees.

How can I become a member?

You must ask a member of your Brockton Republican Ward Committee to nominate you for membership at a Ward Committee meeting. If you are a registered Repubnlican voter and there are fewer than 35 members of your Ward Committee, you will most likely be elected to membership at the next meeting. If the Ward is full, you can become an Associate Member, who can participate in all meetings but cannot vote.
